GUWAHATI: Heavy rains continue to lash several districts of Assam since Monday because of Cyclone Sitrang. The cyclone crossed the Bangladesh coast near Barisal after skirting the Indian coast in West Bengal coast.

Guwahati also faced the rains and winds. With heavy rains raging throughout the night, Guwahatians woke up to incidents of waterlogging in several parts of the city.

A large tree had fallen on the highway because of the winds and blacked the busy Guwahati-Shillong road in Khanapara. Personnel of the District Disaster Management Authority worked tirelessly to chop the tree and clear the highway within hours. There were however very less problems due to the waterlogging owing to Tuesday being declared a local holiday for Diwali.

Heavy rains and winds also damaged houses in different parts of the Nagaon district. Numerous trees and electric poles were uprooted in various parts of the region due to the cyclonic storm on the night of Monday.

Houses in the Kaliabor, Bamuni, Sakmuthia tea estates, and Boraligaon areas of central Assam have also been damaged by the storm. Infrastructure damages have been reported from different parts of the state. No casualties have been reported as of now due to the storm in the state.

The Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metropolitan had issued a helpline number for aid and assistance of the Guwahatians "In view of the effects of cyclonic storm 'Sitrang', concerned citizens may reach out for assistance/ reporting of infrastructural damages, etc. on our helpline number 9365429314. Thank you," tweeted the DC of Kamrup Metropolitan.
